International conference held July 6-9, 2017 at the University of Oklahoma (Norman, OK)

Next July the Native Writers Circle of the Americas will host the 25th anniversary Returning the Gift Indigenous Storytelling and Literary Festival. Over four days, more than a hundred award winning tribal writers, storytellers, and artists will create workshops, dances, staged readings, poetry slams, comedy sketches, documentary films, pedagogical discussions, literary studies, environmental social justice projects, and live art.

Returning the Gift organizers invite artists to send us high quality photo reproductions of art that connects with our theme for the festival “Gathering at Our Headwaters.” The theme allows us to focus on two main threads during our festival—reflection and clarity. Work in any medium is acceptable and collaborative works are invited. Decisions will be based entirely on the photos submitted, so make sure you choose images that represent your work in the best light possible and from various angles if necessary.

Returning the Gift organizers will choose one piece to serve as the official conference art/logo. Winning artists receive the opportunity to choose from a variety of prizes and free registration to attend the conference. Other strong pieces may also be included in conference events or requested for inclusion in our anthology publication. The artist(s) responsible for these pieces will be contacted with further information.

Deadline: 12/15/2017

Response: 1/31/2017

All art submissions should include:

1] a title

2] a short descriptive text about the work

3] name, contact info, and a short bio of the artist(s) that includes tribal affiliation

4] at least one JPEG photograph of the work at 300 DPI or better, thumbnail sized. If your work makes it to the final round of consideration, we may contact you for larger sized files.

Send your photos, necessary information, and/or any questions to returningthegift@gmail.com. Thank you for your interest. We look forward to your participation and presence in July.
